Vieques Fly Fishing Report
La Isla Nena. A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I took a badly needed
vacation to the island of Vieques. It lies off the coast of Puerto Rico
and is part of the Spanish Virgin Islands. There are quite a few flats
located off the beaches and are within easy reach of the wading angler. I
also hooked (and quickly lost) my first bonefish ever - fifteen inches
long or so. I hooked it on one of the epoxy shrimp patterns that I tied
up. I also brought to hand, a superb Barjack that I released. I can’t
count the numerous snappers I caught and released all over the island. The
one thing that amazed me is that I was the only one fly fishing with the
exception of running into a guide and his client - I got my Barjack with
them watching (there are only two guides on the entire island). The place
is not glitzy like San Juan or Cabo San Lucas, just a small island with
two small towns on it. It had all the stuff a visitor would need but with
a laid back attitude that was welcoming. We are planning a trip there
again, it was that nice. If you want more information on fly fishing
Vieques, drop me a email

New Mexico Fishing Report
Everything is between the winter and spring mode. Soon
the mountain access will open up to a runoff that is going to be nice and
long. The San Juan is fishing well. My favorite time of the year to go
there is in the “off season” when there are less crowds, no heat and no
mosquitoes.
