Club Opener Fishing Report

The fishing has been fair to excellent, depending on the place you chose.  What follows is a summary of some key catches by club members.

 *Friday 6 May:

-Mike Jordan caught a 22+ inch rainbow at Hilton Creek and Ray Moon caught 27 rainbows from Magee Creek with the largest being 17 inches.

-So far, Gordie Allman’s best day was in Idaho before he came.  (A 26-inch rainbow from a private stream)  Here, he has the record of hooking but not landing any fish.  That’s a long trip to make for these unfortunate results.  Oh well, plenty of time for catch-up.

-Charlie and Julie Taverna fished Big Springs and although between them only one fish was caught (guess who caught it?), they did have a good day on the stream.

 *Saturday 7 May:

-John Holcomb got 7 nice trout on Crowley and Mike Telles caught a 20 incher in the Sandy Point area of Crawley.

-Bob Kreider and Mike Wright had a great day on a “mystery” creek with many many fish landed averaging about 15 inches

-Rusty Draper caught the biggest fish he has ever caught on Hot Creek. A 21-inch rainbow was a real prize considering the difficulty of fishing on this Blue Ribbon Stream.

*Sunday 8 May:(almost everyone fished Crowley today)

-Julie Taverna caught the first fish on Mothers day at Crawley Lake.

-Bob Habereder caught his first Brown on Crowley and it was an 18 incher.

-Dave Rash caught over 7 rainbows with the largest being 17 inches and Russ Smith, Jim Bradford, Steve Reyes and Jim Everett all did well with Russ catching a 19-inch rainbow. Don Johnson caught 2 nice rainbows on the lake using a black wooly bugger.

-Jim Wilt, Kent Berge and Carl Ronk made the hike to the Gorge.  Between them all, they caught over 10 fish.  In general, they considered the fishing to be Fair.

*Monday 9 May:  No one fished today.  Snowy and cold weather set in.  This was a good day for fly tying and going to the fly shops (if you had chains).

 *Tuesday 10 May:

-Mike Wright and Bob Kreider had a good day on Hilton Creek with the spawners still there.  Over 30 fish caught between them.

-Bob Habereder had a great day on Magee Creek.  One fish was over 20 inches and over 35 landed.

-Not a great day on Crowley today.  Dave Rash did catch a few fish but in general, the fishing was not great.  Lots of wind in the afternoon affected the fishing.

- Jim Wilt, Kent Berge and Carl Ronk fished Big Springs with the fishing being only fair.  The spawners were there, but catching them was very hard.

*Wednesday 11 May:

-Crowley opened up today with a lot of quality fish caught.  Russ Smith had at least 10 fish with the largest being 20 inches on at least 3 others being in the 18-19 inch range. Gordie Allman caught about 7 nice fish and others caught fish but Russ was on fire with the midge rig and self tied flies.

-Speaking of big fish: Mike Telles and Don Johnson went to Alpers Pond for a try at the big ones.  Using egg patterns, prince nymphs and San Juan worms, the two caught about 10 lunkers between them.  They also had a lot of break offs on the strike and were using 3X leaders.  These were some really big fish and both Mike and Don recommend the Alpers Pond if you get the chance.

-Bob Kreider, Mike Jordon and Mike Wright fished Magee Creek.  Bob caught about 7 fish averaging about 16 inches.  Mike Jordon caught 1 fish that was about 18 inches and Mike Wright caught a bunch of fish throughout the day.

Thursday was the go home day and I believe this opener was a real success.  Many fish were caught and the indications are that the fishing this year will even be greater during the closer. You need to get together with Mike Telles and get your calendar arranged so that you can make it for the closer.    Reported by Mike Wright.
