Mono Hot Springs, My Fathers Day

Saturday June 19, 2004

I need to fix my hunger for wild Brown and Golden trout.

I drove the growling dive to Edison Lake., It took  two and half hours at ten miles and hour. a single road , paved, but a bit rough. but doable. I would have had some nice pictures but while wading I dunked my little camera.

I left my folks home in Fresno at 4 AM. I arrived at Huntington Lake at 6 AM, I  poked around until 8 AM and finally I found a guy at the local store named Noel who gave me a tip to Mono Hot Springs near Lake Edison, I arrived at Edison Lake around noon. Drove back to the camp ground I drove thought the Mono Creek campground and found the day use area. I drove down to a nice spot and from my high point I could see a sand bar I thought I could wade out on.  So I put on my waders, rigged up walk out on the sand bar, and stepped in a deep hole right off. I must say even though everything in my fly vest was wet, inside my waders was dry, yep that draw sting at the top of you Cabela's waders does have a propose. and I was so happy that I remembered my wading belt as well.

I started catching nice 10 to 12 inch Browns, a few Rain Bows mixed in, at about 3 PM I was wore out, hungry, so I went to the Van and took a nap until 6 PM. I wanted to fish as the sun went down. I wake up and got back in the water at 5:30 6 PM and started throwing a par-shoot Adams. It was awesome, hit after hit, they tore that Adams apart, and I just keep thronging it too. as it got dark I started catching the 14 inch browns, and then it happened, I hook the train, when I tried to to stop the screaming reel only to hit my thumb so hard I thought I broke it. WOW!!!!

What can I say. I couldn't have had a better fathers day. Oh how big was he, we'll never know!

I want to thank Noël at the restaurant at Huntington lake for his help.

I want to thank my wife for putting up with me, as I drove out late that night an accident had happened on this one lane road, it took three sheriffs cars to handle, a VW hit a jeep head on, the road was blocked for hours. One thing there are no phones in the wilderness area that's why they call it wilderness. It was near midnight before I could let my family know I was ok.

She still isn't to happy with me. But I am assured I am forgiven., Ya right.

I heartily agree with the person who first said, the best thing about trout fishing is the beautiful places it takes you to. This place is just one step from the gates of heaven. Words and photos can't quite capture the crisp, cool beauty of this area

Fishing in the Mono Hot Springs area is an adventure of a lifetime.

Two large lakes, Edison and Florence have been known for their lunker browns and rainbows.

Fly fishing is superb whether you fish on the San Joaquin River or one of the many high country lakes or streams for the allusive Golden Trout and Brook Trout.
