Dale Darling was born in Akron, Ohio, and attended
undergraduate schools in Michigan and Ohio. In 1978, he was awarded a
Masters of Music in Theory Composition from Akron University.
Married that same year, he and his wife Shan have raised
three daughters who grew up in Colorado while Dale was working on his DMA at
the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dale later operated a fly shop, and for
more than 25 years he has tied flies commercially, while teaching thousand
of people this fly tying art, as well as all aspects of fly fishing.
Many fly fishers consider dry fly fishing as the epitome
of our sport, we see the fish take an imitation of a natural insect and the
fight is on. The thrill of seeing that take is truly unique and exciting.
This month we are going to learn from an expert how to choose which dry fly
to tie on, how to read the water when fishing dries, and how to hook the
fish you are after.
In Dale’s words, I don’t know how much we can control our nighttime
dreams. I guess we need them to rest our mind and to entertain ourselves
during
slumber.
When it comes to daydreaming, though, we can control what
we think about. And lots of us think
about fly fishing.
Maybe it’s a fly tying session tonight. It might be an upcoming outing with
a friend. I find thinking about a quick trip to a
local warm water pond
exhilarates me and
fills me with hopes of hooking a bass or bluegill
maybe a carp or wiper.
Who knows? That’s the cool thing about day dreaming, we
can make it come out exactly as we hope it will. And sometimes it does. When
we get to the water and things don’t quite work out, what do we do then? We
look for solutions. We book a guided trip, get some
new fly patterns or
take a casting class. Somehow, we just keep on trying.
We’ll never give up, otherwise how
will we fulfill our
fly fishing dreams?
Come on in, stay for a while, kick back and remember
the fine
evening sitting in front of a fire talking about the
trip at hand, or the last one. Share memories with friends, plan another
trip, and learn something new. While you’re here have fun and enjoy the
process.
Dale has self-published more than a dozen small booklets
called "Fly Fishing Solutions" which he will be bringing with him.
We will enjoy the skill, the enthusiasm and the joy
of fishing with
dry flies. You won’t want to miss this meeting.
