John spent his formative years crawling
around the Olympic Peninsula chasing trout, salmon and steelhead. Most of
his 4 years at Colorado College were spent fishing the Arkansas and Platte
Rivers. After college, he followed his fly rod to Telluride, where he
became the head guide for Telluride Outside in 1991. John served as
Marketing Director and casting instructor for the Scott Fly Rod Company from
1994-2001. In the spring of 2001, he and two guiding friends took over the
Telluride Outside guide service and Telluride Angler fly shop.
Duncan has fished the rivers of Southwest
Colorado for 17 years. He has also fished extensively in the Bahamas, the
Pacific Northwest, Baja California and Florida, with occasional forays to
Christmas Island, Canada, the Northeast and the Texas Hill Country. His
favorite fishing is still in Southwest Colorado, where his guide service
fishes the San Miguel, Dolores and Uncompahgre rivers.

Slide
Show: “Fly Fish Telluride ~ Pristine waters of the San Juan Mountains”
Our slide show
features the varied waters of three seldom-fished trout streams: The San
Miguel, Dolores and Uncompahgre. Southwest Colorado is one of the most
remote areas of the Rocky Mountains and home to pristine trout streams. The
San Miguel is one of the last free-flowing rivers in America, with
headwaters that spill into the Telluride valley from Colorado’s highest
waterfall, Bridal Veil Falls. The San Miguel winds west for 80 miles,
joining the Dolores on its journey to the Colorado.
The Dolores also has a
significant length of free flowing water. The top 45 miles of its watershed
includes a dozen tributary creeks, some of which contain native populations
of Colorado River Cutthroats. The infamous “Lower Dolores” is perhaps the
most technically demanding trout stream in Colorado. This tailwater section
of the Dolores winds through the remote Lower Dolores Canyon. The water is
flat and thin, clear as air, and home to trout that occasionally top 24
inches. This is high-stakes dry fly fishing at it’s finest, the ultimate
test of an angler’s casting ability and hatch-matching expertise.
The Uncompahgre
provides an interesting alternative to the numerous freestone streams that
drain the San Juan Mountains. It also ranks among Colorado’s best winter
trout streams and is our favorite guide service destination from November
through March. The Ridgway Reservoir creates a tailwater fishery that
provides year-around opportunities to catch hefty trout using a variety of
techniques. Deep pools and undercuts harbor some spectacular trout,
including browns, rainbows and two species of cutthroat. Trout in the
Uncompahgre enjoy a diverse menu. We often fish dry flies, nymphs and
streamers in the same fishing day.
In addition to the
outstanding public water of the San Miguel, Dolores and Uncompahgre,
Telluride Angler has seven exclusive private water leases on these rivers.
Many of these are shown in our slide show, including shots from Dunton Hot
Springs on the West Fork Dolores.
