Local Stream Cleanup May 20th

On  May 20th 2006 will be our annual local stream cleanup conservation outing. We will spend several hours picking up trash and replacing the special regulations signs if necessary. Then you can take a break for lunch, and spend some time fishing in Bear Creek if you wish,  It is unlikely the roads will have been graded, so 4WD is strongly recommended. We will meet up in Angelus Oaks for Bear Creek  and carpool down in the available 4WD vehicles. This is a great opportunity to get to know our local streams, since some of the people who fish them frequently will be there with you. Even if you’re brand new to fly fishing, we’ll help get you going.

Things to bring:
Water
Hat and sunscreen
Work gloves if you have them
Lunch
Fishing equipment if you want to fish

Fishing equipment: the streams are small and can be brushy, so the shorter and lighter the rod, the happier you may be. You can fish it with a 9 foot, 5 wt, but if you have something shorter and lighter, bring it. The fish are more spooky than they are picky, so stealth is more important than fly selection. Size 16 elk hair caddis, red or yellow humpy, or royal trude all work well. For nymphs, size 16 or 18 pheasant tail or hare’s ear. There are also a lot of gnats and large black ants, so size 18 black dry flies as droppers can help a lot.

If you have any questions, or plan to join us but can’t make it to the April meeting, send me an email or give me a call to get the details on where to meet.  skopp@esri.com 909-793-6831

2006 California Trout Volunteer Opportunities in the Eastern Sierra

Hot Creek Survey Event- April 19th and 20th (postponed - TBA) - Volunteers needed!

Hot Creek is one of the most productive wild trout fisheries in California.  Surveying or electro-fishing the creek’s fish populations is an essential step in maintaining the health of Hot Creek and the associated watershed.  Our surveying efforts are critical in assessing the population dynamics of both wild trout and native species.  DFG staff is limited for this event and we need your immediate help!  Please contact Rob Lusardi at lusardi@caltrout.org or (760) 924-1008.

What you need to bring:  It will likely be cold down by the water, so please bring appropriate layers and chest-high neoprene waders if you have them.  Additionally, please bring a heavy wool hat, long underwear (tops and bottoms), gloves and a good warm (and ideally water-proof) jacket.  If you do not have appropriate waders please email me, as waders are available from DFG.  Generally, we’ll be on the river between 800am and 2pm for both days (details on where to meet will follow).  Experience electro-fishing is preferred but not necessary as DFG will provide instruction before the event.  Please bring a packed lunch for both days.  Drinking water will be available.

Jeffrey Pine Planting on Rush Creek- May 20th- Volunteers needed!

In cooperation with the Mono Lake Committee, we will continue our efforts to restore Rush Creek and its brown trout fishery.  Activities will primarily consist of planting Jeffrey Pine seedlings along the Rush Creek riparian corridor.  This is an incredible opportunity to get outside and make a positive difference in this ongoing restoration effort.  Please meet in front of the Mono Lake Committee offices at 8am.  Coffee and snacks will be provided.  Please contact Rob Lusardi at lusardi@caltrout.org or (760) 924-1008.

Deadman Creek Restoration Project- June 10th- Volunteers needed!

In cooperation with Friends of the Inyo and the USFS we will be rehabilitating and restoring the Deadman Creek dispersed campground areas impacting the riparian and watershed qualities of this headwater and the Owens River.  Please contact Rob Lusardi at lusardi@caltrout.org or (760) 924-1008 or Jamie Anderson of Friends of the Inyo at (760) 873-6500 for more information or to sign up.

2nd Annual Protect Our Headwaters Day on the Owens River headwaters- July 8th- Volunteers needed!

Last year this event brought together a diverse group of NGOs, agencies and volunteers.  This year, we will continue our work on the north side of Deadman Creek by rock barricading OHV (off highway vehicle) routes, raking out proliferated routes along the Deadman Creek floodplain, and facilitating riparian vegetation recruitment.  We will also be joined by a local aquatic entomologist from the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Lab who will give a streamside talk about the native invertebrates and potential impacts from aquatic invasive species such as the New Zealand Mud Snail.  This event is in cooperation with Friends of the Inyo and the USFS.  Please contact Rob Lusardi at lusardi@caltrout.org or (760) 924-1008 or Jamie Anderson of Friends of the Inyo at (760) 873-6500 for more information.  Please sign up early!

Glass Creek Meadow Hike- September 9th

Recently featured in Southwest Fly Fishing Magazine as one of the premiere destinations in California, Glass Creek meadow is one of the largest sub-alpine meadows in the entire Sierra and home to a sustainable wild brook trout fishery, as well as expansive views of the Sierra Crest and San Joaquin Mountain.  The area is also rich with biodiversity and contains the headwaters of the upper Owens River.  We will meet at 8am at the Obsidian Dome parking lot off Highway 395, north of Mammoth Lakes and head out from there.  Please bring your hiking boots, plenty of water and a packed lunch.  Approximate time for roundtrip is 4 hours and the hike should be characterized as moderate to strenuous.  For more information or to get involved, please contact Rob Lusardi at lusardi@caltrout.org or (760) 924-1008.

Note:  all dates are subject to change and dependent on weather, so please stay tuned!

Best,

Robert A. Lusardi
