CONSERVATION
I can’t say that I love fishing our streams, rivers and lakes any more than you do. As a local kid growing up here I loved to fish and the two week vacation a year was not enough for me. I was lucky enough to have parents who like to go the mountains often during the year and I had the chance to hike and fish with my family. After getting my drivers license I was able to do more fishing and hiking all over our mountains and I really enjoyed the experience up until I married and settled down with a family and job. Years later when I had time I would go back to same streams to fish and would notice how different it was.
When I retired I found more time to fish and hike and really notice how things have changed of course. The population had about doubled which meant that it was harder to get away from everyone. I joined whole heartily a group of volunteers that where trying to maintain Deep Creek. I got involved with other conservation groups and have had a chance to go to Washington D.C. and talk to our representatives in the US Congress and the US Senate. I know we can never turn back to clock to make things the way it was when Columbus landed but I feel we minimize what damage is done in the future
In the next months I will be trying to explain some of the issue that are on the front burner and give you updates on what is happing with the issues on the back burners. I will not over burden you with request for you to take action all the time I will ask you for about an hour a year to do something that benefit our streams, rivers and lakes. I want to share with you what I learned and some of the best places left that can be protected. I want to share how to best talk to our representatives in government and agencies to make the best use of your time.
